Dr Joseph Lawler (BAppSc, MBBS, MHPol, FRACP) was awarded his medical degree from the University of Sydney. He subsequently completed his residency at St Vincent’s Hospital and then Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH) in Sydney. It was specifically his experience within the dynamic Liver Transplant Unit at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital that motivated Dr Lawler to pursue Advanced Training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology (Liver Medicine). Dr Lawler completed his Advanced Training at RPAH and Liverpool Hospital in Sydney and is now a specialist in the field of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

Dr Joseph Lawler became a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2011 and went on to complete a Master of Health Policy at the University of Sydney in 2013 as part of his ongoing dedication to public health. Dr Lawler continues to demonstrate his advocacy within the context of Indigenous health and medical education.

In 2013, Dr Lawler undertook a twelve-month clinical fellowship in Liver Medicine and Liver Transplant Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. Working with world leaders in field of gastroenterology, liver and transplant medicine, Dr Lawler experienced first hand, the exciting innovations revolutionising the treatment of chronic viral hepatitis, among other breakthrough treatments. Dr Lawler is excited to be able to bring this international experience back home to Australia.

Currently, Dr Joseph Lawler is a consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist in Sydney’s Inner West and in Western NSW. He provides services that include the diagnosis and treatment of general gastroenterological and liver diseases in addition to endoscopy and colonoscopy. These services include the screening, diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal and liver tumours, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis), coeliac disease, gastrointestinal reflux, irritable bowel syndrome and all forms of hepatitis, chronic liver disease and cirrhosis. He also works in Addiction Medicine, with a particular focus on alcohol addiction, including ambulatory alcohol detoxification.

Dr Joseph Lawler is passionate about quality of care for individuals within the health system and the implementation of state of the art treatment practices. He is particularly interested in the opportunities that his specialist area provides, allowing him to reach people from diverse communities in Sydney and throughout regional centres of New South Wales.
